Full STEAM Ahead!

June 7, 2017

We love pretty much every STEM or STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) project that comes our way, and we love an innovation challenge.  For these reasons, we couldn’t have been happier to host the winners of the Dare 2B Digital Innovation Challenge at our Blue Sky Center in San Jose.

The Challenge asked teams to develop ideas to solve a real-world problem in one of five categories and create a three-minute video describing their idea and the impact it would have.  A distinguished panel of judges selected the winning teams.  The group of students that won the competition did so with a wearable that tracks carbon monoxide levels through the skin, allowing family members or friends to receive alerts when a loved one smokes cigarettes.  This allows them to assist the smoker when they are trying to quit smoking.   The winners, from Stauffer Middle Schools, are (from left, in the picture above) Oliver Palafox, Aaron Sauceda, Christopher Almaguer, and Ezekiel Leyva.

The visit to Blue Sky was part of the grand prize, which included a trip to San Francisco and a visit to several Silicon Valley companies.  It was wonderful to show eager students around and a delight to see the enthusiasm with which they approach the newest technologies.  They are a great example to anyone wishing to find their way into the world of engineering.  These young innovators took a problem they recognized from their own lives and created a solution using state of the art technology and their own vivid imaginations.

The Challenge was run by Carrot, a company set up to address a growing need to encourage more students to study in STEAM areas.  Carrot’s mission is to get more students excited about pursuing the STEAM fields, addressing the problems with innovative solutions, like designing and running critically acclaimed Challenges which engage and inspire students.

Recognized by the California State Legislature as a premier kids’ interactive learning program for exploring careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (S.T.E.A.M.), Dare 2B Digital (www.dare2bdigital.org @dare2bdigital) inspires young innovators through interactive, hands-on learning experiences. Dare 2B Digital is a program of the Invent Your Future Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization presented by Invent Your Future Enterprises (www.inventyourfuture.com @IYFNews).   You can learn more about them at http://www.dare2bdigitalconference.com.

Cheers!
