Concept Refinement

Once the field of ideas has been narrowed to a few, high impact concepts, we can begin to refine the details with the development of packaging prototypes. These prototypes can include 3D printed models or detailed digital mock-ups that can be tested through a variety of different technical processes. Mold flow analysis allows us to understand how a mold will perform during the injection molding process and how the mold design will impact longevity as the tool ages. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulates stresses, temperature changes and shocks to demonstrate how a molded part will perform in real-world environments. CT scanning provides virtual cross-sectioning of physical products, allowing for the analysis of internal features without physical damage. These critical tests allow for course correction in mold performance characteristics before investing in physical tooling. Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is employed for concepts with a high potential for commercialization. DFM answers questions involving the final mold design, mold making location, mold action and scalability options for future growth.

Prototype Development

Once a concept has been refined and the design has been finalized in solid modeling software, a single cavity tool is developed to verify mold performance. This prototype mold ensures that the part performs exactly to spec while maintaining the desired grip, texture and color that will resonate with end consumers. Prototype molds can be tested across any of Jabil’s North American or European facilities. A successful prototype mold test allows customers to move forward with the development of manufacturing molds that are capable of achieving industry leading cavitation and cycle times.
