Tooling and Molding

Bringing CPG packaging ideas to life through design excellence

Rising consumer expectations require manufacturing excellence in mold making that produces the highest quality plastic parts at the best outputs and lowest cost. Inflating commodity costs and increasing competition have necessitated higher tonnage presses, shorter cycle times and larger cavitations. Today, leading high-precision molders leverage equipment in the 450-1200 ton range and continue to drive utilization rates higher (90-95%) – all while decreasing cycle times for commodity, IML and technical components.

The Jabil Packaging Solutions engineering organization provides brands with holistic molding and tooling services – ranging from prototype mold building, industrial mold building and in-house maintenance and repair. Our molding and tooling customers experience industry leading part consistency, material conservation and efficiency plus the peace of mind that their molds can be adapted and tweaked in the event of a design change We are dedicated to providing industry leading cycle times and the highest levels of reliability, accuracy and asset availability. Our global tooling solutions are enabled by centers of excellence in North America, Europe and Asia.

Stack Molding

Stack molding represents an exciting departure from typical injection molding as each tool contains multiple parting surfaces that can each include multiple cavities. Stack molds achieve high precision and leverage interchangeable inserts – ensuring consistent part quality. While stack molds are not as fast as traditional single mold designs, and typically cannot achieve the same clamping force, they more than make up for those deficiencies due to their ability to maximize the total output of high productivity injection molding machines. Well-designed stack molds commonly double the capacity of an injection molding machine. The Jabil engineering team is experienced and knowledgeable in accommodating the nuanced machine requirements for stack molds.

Servo Mold Actuation

Pneumatic and hydraulic motors have been mainstays in injection molding for decades. But newer electric servo motors are quickly replacing these legacy systems in injection molding operations across the world. Servo Molds leverage software that resides on the servo controller, providing the operator with the ability to quickly and seamlessly alter molding processes. Servo molds also enhance cleanliness, a critical factor for consumer healthcare and food & beverage applications. Hydraulic motors carry the risk of leaking while pneumatic motors can result in air exhaust and the disturbance of fine particulates on the factory floor. Servo Molds are self- contained and do not require any additional lubricants that may cause contamination.

In-Mold Closing

Flip top closures, tethered closures and many vials and lids are typically molded in the open position to prevent the living hinge from brittleness and breakage. This technique has historically barred these packaging formats from leveraging higher cavitation mold designs. In Mold Closing (IMC) is an innovative new molding technique that allows these packaging components to be molded in the closed position. IMC improves production yield through higher mold cavitation. This in-turn reduces conserves floor space and eliminates additional manufacturing automations, reducing complexity and cost. Jabil Packaging Solutions offers IMC solutions in pneumatic, hydraulic and servo actuation variants.
